World Record Attempt For Longest Individual Drum Roll
29 July 2014
On the 28th of October 1664 the Admiral's Regiment (Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot), later to become the Royal Marines, was formed. The Order-in-Council raising the Regiment included the following:
'twelve hundred men are to be put into one Regiment under one Colonel, one Lieutenant Colonel and one Sergeant Major and to be divided into six Companies, each Company to consist of two hundred soldiers; and to have one Captain, one Lieutenant, one Ensign, one Drummer, four Sergeants and four Corporals........'
The current world record for the longest individual drum roll is 12 hours and 3 seconds. However, Sergeant Bugler Graham ‘Stevo’ Stephenson Royal Marines will attempt to break this record on Tuesday 19th August 2014 onboard the historic Royal Yacht Britannia as part of the Royal Marines’ 350th anniversary celebrations.
Taking place during the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, ‘Stevo’ has spent many hours preparing for the record attempt at his band’s home located in MOD Caledonia, Rosyth. In addition to wanting to break the world record, he is also keen to raise much needed funds for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) which offers invaluable financial support to former and serving Royal Marines and their families.
Earlier this year the Royal Marines Corps of Drums smashed the existing Guinness World Record for the longest group drum roll which previously stood at 28 hours, 19 minutes and 3 seconds. The record attempt took place at the Tower of London and following some pretty grim weather the 53 strong team achieved a total duration of 64 hours, 27 minutes, 59 seconds on Saturday 3rd May 2014.
To assist ‘Stevo’ in his epic endeavour, Premier have been extremely generous in donating a snare and their support throughout this year has been very much appreciated. However, there are plenty of opportunities for the record attempt to fail and invigilators from the drumming community will be present to ensure the Guinness World Records rules for the individual record attempt are not infringed.
The Corps of Drums will continue to raise money for the RMCTF until the 28th of October this year and if you would like to support them, please make a donation either online (www.justgiving.com/RMCOD1664) or by text. Thank you.
